Hong Kong Beauty Treatment Sparks Death Probe

A new Hong Kong beauty treatment has recently been created to help patients with cancer. The treatment, which involves blood transfusions, has reportedly been practiced on 44 patients. However, it has sparked a probe into the treatment after four women have fallen ill, with one of those dying.

The blood transfusion beauty treatment was designed as a way to improve the immune system and the looks of those suffering from cancer. 44 patients have received the treatment, including 46-year-old Chan Yuen-lam.

The procedure takes blood from the patient so that the immune cells can be isolated. These are injected back into the blood stream. It is an extremely complicated process and is still in its trial stages. It is thought that the patients have paid HK$50,000, which is about US$6,400. The process is only available from DR Beauty Center.

The women died from Mycobacterium abscessus, a bacterium that developed in the bloodsteam. It causes a number of infections in patients, including that of the lungs and skin.

According to BBC news, the Hong Kong government is now reviewing the regulations on all procedures and facilities in private health care centers. Ko Wing-man, Hong Kong Health Secretary reported: “The aim of the review is to strengthen regulatory control of private health care facilities, including high risk medical treatments, in order to safeguard the public safety.”

The four women who had the Hong Kong beauty treatment were thought to have gone into sceptic shock. Out of the three remaining in hospital, two are now stable but the third, a 60-year-old, remains critically ill, reports the MailOnline. It is still unclear as to whether all these women had cancer or just wanted the beauty treatment. DR Beauty Center report that the doctor performing the treatment is not employed by them. The case continues.
